Without a trace...
One British Ace was shot down as history dictated but the German Ace survived giving the Gemans a victory! After the third turn half the German pilots were out of ammo including the Ace!!! As they were headed back to their bases they were hounded by the British who could have picked up some easy kills but could not shoot straight!? Rich's pilot and his wing man were unharmed and had plenty of ammo but were too busy doing special maneuvers that they could not get anyone in their sights so ended the game with out firing a single shot!Dark Days
Should have been a fair fight but the British set up to get a jump on the Germans leaving half their plans out of the entire battle. Instead, after their first pass, of drawing in the Germans to the rest of the brits they moved away from the late arriving plans! Not a single German was shot down and the entire group that jumped the German were shot down. Dark Day indeed!!!!!!!!!!!Surprise over Brooklands
A GOOD day for the Germans! The aircraft factory was levelled! Bill got shot down for the 8th straight game! Fun was had by all.Operational... at last
A GOOD day for the Brits! Actually the Poles!!! This is where the 303 Squadron engage the Germans and win the day. Jusat like in the movie. The hero of the day was "Bulletproof" Art whose Blenheim IFs could not and would not get shot down. This time the majority of the Germans got shot down. Both a German pilot (Rich who was only 1 kill away from acehood) and a British pilot, Bill B., got shot down and killed.Galland's JG 26 Over Rochford
Another BAD day for the Brits! All but one of their planes were shot down again. All but one of the Bombers completed their mission. That one bomber was only damaged. No German planes were shot down. Karen, the most experienced British Pilot, was killed in this battle. Bill Bartlett managed to get shot down again but surviced. He has been shot down every battle he has participated in... and proud of it! A new German pilot took to the skies this battle Bübba Wotring and even managed to shoot down a British adversary.Four in a Day
A BAD day for the Brits! All but one of their planes were shot down and the one remaining was damaged on exiting the board. The Bits were jumped by the Germans attacking from behind and lost one plane right from the start. All told the Brits did not fire their guns once! The Germans had a field day... They could not shake the German fighters. Several of the German Bf 109Es fired so often they were out of ammo. Rich's Bf 109 fired at the one Hurricane trying to leave the area but forgot he ran out of ammo the previous turn. In all it was a quick and fun game. And as luck favors the bold all the pilots survived the battle to fight another day.Shaking the Stuka Myth
A victory for the Germans! All the British planes were shot down again. Are the German Pilots getting better or luckier! All the campaign pilots (three were shot down) did survive their bail out rolls and landed safely on English soil. And that same British Farmer let another German Pilot get away (Bill Jenkins). There is talk that the Farmer is actually Irish with sympathies for the Germans. The Radar Station was destroyed only after the Flak guarding the airfield was to heavy and forced those Stukas to turn and finish the job. Bill Bartlet seems to get shot down most of his games. And the best British Pilot was a green pilot (NPC) this game with three and half kills! Historical the Germans did so bad that they stopped sending in the Stukas, but hey, we again changed history!!!!Black Thursday
A stunning victory for the Germans! All the British planes were shot down save one and that one was damaged and out of ammo. All the British campaign pilots did survive their bail out rolls and landed safely on English soil. The two airfields were damaged and not destroyed. They went in high to avoid the AA defending the airfields but that reduced the accuracy of the bombing! Not only do the Germans take the lead in number of games won but in the overall campaign points. Historical the Germans did so bad that they stopped send in the Bf-110s as escort fighters, but hey we changed history!!!!Talley Ho!
Lots of new players this game. Karen came in on the six of all the bombers and out of the Sun!. Rich with the Bf-110s jumped John's Flight of Hurricanes but John gracefully out maneuvered them. The Bombers took the brunt of the enemy attacks, only two completed their mission unharmed. Both John and Bob Hassa, a new pilot, got shot down but both escaped unharmed and will live to fly another day. The British won this game by only 4 points...Target: Portland
Lots of bombers! Portland got bombed bad. The Brits had their hands full but could only shoot down one and damage another. The accompaning Fighter escorts paid the price, but hey that was their job. The addition of clouds did not affect the game but the random placement of the Brits did. They could not, however, get close enough to make their 8xLMGs per Hurricane payoff. Two Pilots became skilled this game, one British and one German.Duel Between Eagles
This was all fighters including an Ace (+3) on each side. Things turned bad very quickly once a green pilot mistook the British Ace's plane for a German and shot him down. Several German pilots quickly claimed credit for that one; however, Fighter Command got a strange Telegram from Germany stating "It was not us!!" Then the top British player, Karen (Allied Skilled pilot), got shot down and survived her bailout. This left the Brits at a server disadvantage giving the Germans another victory.Dogfight over Convoy Bosom
First game where we used "Attacking out of the Sun" and clouds!. The British pilots used the sun to their advantage and everyone avoided the clouds. There were some grueling dog fights and Rich Jarosz (Axis Skilled pilot) got shot down. Landing wounded in a farmer's field he convinced the farmer he was a Czech Pilot and escaped. Bill Batlett (Allied Green pilot) was shortly shot down and landed in the same field. When asked about the downed German pilot the farmer felt very poorly, especially after Bill kicked the crap out of the farmer. The Axis won this one only by four points (the score for one plane) so it was a very close game.Into the Darkness
First game where we used spotting!. I believe it worked out well. The formations had to fly straight until they spotted the enemy. Even when the planes were spotted they had to be illuminated in order to shot at them. Close game with Good formations, as this is what did in the German Bombers. Most of the British planes ran out of ammo but stayed on the board to lend support. Good team work on the part of the Allies but once the bombers started taking hits it was every German for themselves! A good Allied victory with several Allied campaign pilots sharing in on some kills.Impossible Mission
The Brits pulled it off! Green pilot John Stienhilber damaged the bridge with his Fairey Battle, doing his father proud. The battle opened with Mike and Rich shooting each other's campaign pilots out of the sky and the AA at the bridge missed every time (Norm was rolling for one so don't blame me). The Brits rolled a Veteran Pilot, using the variable rule, which was put to great use. But since all of campaign pilots were green most ran out of ammo and high tailed it off the board. This was our largest game to date 8 Players and we had room for a couple more.Jolly Good Show
This scenario started pretty bad for the Allies. Their squadrons over shot the escorting Bf-110Cs and then strarted to do some fancy flying that placed them square in the sites of the Axis players. The Axis gunners could not take advantage of this opportunity as they rolled the dice like.......The Top Pilot of Last Game, John Steinhilber, executed some fancy flying but it yielded him nothing but an Out of Control aircraft but he did recover quickly. Eleven of the 12 bombers made it off the board but as luck would have it the exit rolls for the bombers and fighters yielded a lot of downed and damaged aircraft?! This resulted in a Major Allied Victory.
Initial Encounter
Or should it be "3 in one day"? This was a Major Allied Victory! Historical the Allies shot down 2 bombers but today they scored 7 victories. Green (+0) Pilot John Steinhilber shot down 3 of the Axis. For those that do not know John's father was a US Bombardier on B-17s (I believe) and was shot down twice, once behind enemy lines. Guess he was taking a little revenge....The opening set up was random and one British Flight of Spitfires set up right beside the formation of Ju-88s. Karen flew into the formation (and stayed there?) and managed to damage a number of planes before she personally got shot down. John's Flight next engaged the enemy and the feeding frenzy began! As Karen was dangling under the umbrella of her parachute she exclaimed while looking at John going to town, "What a crushing blow for the Axis". She also was grinning from ear the ear....
The Axis only managed to get one undamaged Ju-88 for the board... OK, so it was mine and I ran like hell to get off with my skin......
Poland has not perished yet
Another AXIS Victory! Warsaw got bombed but the Anti-aircraft did turn back several bombers. The Polish defense was uncoordinated and this left a Skilled (+1) Bf-110c piloted by a Non-Player Crew (NPC) to score 2 Victories by picking them off one at a time. Another Axis pilot (myself) shot down another Pole and only one Pole (a new player) shot down the only Axis loss. Not on my watch!
The first scenario of the Campaign ended in an AXIS Victory. Karen Jarosz of the Polish Air Force however was the only pilot to down an enemy plane. The passing Stukas made one pass at the Poles taking off and this resulted in no planes being damaged from gunfire but a mid-air collision resulted in a fire on a Stuka that was promptly put out but caused Elevator damage on a Plz 11.C which crash landed leaving the pilot only slightly wounded.
OVER THE CHANNEL: is a campaign for the popular CHECK YOUR 6! Air Combat and Campaign Rules. This Campaign will consist of 20 historical scenarios for recreating the aerial campaign over Poland, England and France from September 1939 to January 1941. Each player will take the role of a green pilot and advance through the ranks on his/her way to becoming an Ace!
In this campaign I have designed two new scenarios that take place during the September Campaign as the attack and opening stages of WW II was to be known. The first Not On My Watch! takes place during the opening hours of the war. The second scenario Poland Has Not Perished Yet... shows the brave Polish pilots continuing to fight back even when all is lost.
Email me, Richard M.J. Jarosz, for details
Check back here later to see the progress of both Allied and Axis pilots.
